Spinal decompression is designed to relieve your back pain by enabling misaligned discs to return to their proper position. By returning the disc to its normal position we reduce the pain caused when the bulging or herniated disc presses upon the nerves that run through your spine. Patients often come to us with hip pain when the pain originates in the low back and refers to the hip.

Spinal Decompression Therapy
With spinal decompression therapy a specialized padded traction table is used. While lying on your back, the doctor will guide the traction movement using special computer software. The table alternately stretches and releases your spine, focusing on the lumbar, thoracic, sacral, or cervical regions depending on the area of your injury.
Each stretch relieves pressure on the injured area and promotes the flow of healing fluids to the area that can rehydrate discs.
There are many conditions of chronic pain and soreness that can be treated with spinal decompression therapy, including:
- Slipped or bulging discs
- Herniated or torn discs
- Degeneration of the disc due to disease or aging
- Spinal stenosis
- Facet syndrome
- Upper back pain
- Neck pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Sciatica
- Fibromyalgia
- Pinched nerves
The number of treatments needed greatly depends on the severity of the problem. As a comprehensive treatment plan designed to strengthen and support the healing and restoration of the spine, our doctors may also suggest massage therapy and rehabilitative exercises in addition to spinal decompression.
What is Spinal Decompression
Spinal decompression is a unique way of treating lower back and neck pain. Due to aging, injury, wear and tear, damage to the soft discs that help cushion and protect the vertebrae in your spine may occur. When the discs are injured, they will bulge beyond their limits. This creates pressure on the spinal cord's nerves, spreading to the arms, legs, and other parts of the body.
Spinal decompression creates a vacuum effect during the therapy; this is called “negative intra-discal pressure”, which retracts the herniated or bulging disc. This reduces the pressure on the nerves while allowing degenerated disc tissue to heal naturally. By decompressing the spine, an increase the flow of nutrient-rich fluids occurs. This promotes hydration of degenerated discs allowing for restoration and prevention of further damage and pain.
After injury or illness, restoring function to the musculoskeletal system is crucial in healing. At Suncoast Integrative Healthcare, our doctors will work with you to establish a personalized treatment plan.
